Doing a spot check on Avatars in Second Life

A recent article features my work a New World Notes has brought up a lot of feedback. The article features my long standing assertions that Second Life freedom of identity rather than leading to identity creativity actually creates hyper-gendered avatars which confirm to social norms even more so than real bodies are able to. That is Second Life is making up for a lack in many people's real life.

A quick drop in to a major hub confirms what I see again and again. Call them barbie and ken dollars, or cyber bimbos and cyber beefcakes, this "design" is what the virtual environment of Second Life is selecting for.
