Virtual everywehre coming soon, how Web 3.0 will make the entire world virtual
Above is San Francisco in Google Earth. No surprisingly it is one of the mot modelled parts of Google Earth, with almost every building now represented in 3-D and skinned with a image. This enables you to actually zoom through the map. On top of this there is information coming from sites like Flickr, Gowalla, Foursquare, Facebook, YouTube, and (maybe most important) Twitter which enables you to get images and information about these locations.
This information is so in depth that you can get real time data and images from many parts of the world, along with more static graphic information from sites like Flickr and even longer term Semantic information from sites like Wikipedia. All have APIs which allow you to "mash-up" the information in to something new.
This is going to fundamentally change the way we as a culture deal with space and place. For example the other day I was looking at twitter distributions in California and found that they were clustering up a single road in San Fran. Looking closer I saw a bunch of images being loaded with TwitPic. It turned out that the parade for the World Series winners was happening. Almost every part of a the parade was being capture and upload to Twitpics and I could see specific floats as they moved down the street, and even follow certain people in the crowd as they moved along to get a better view.
This could all be mapped to a KML and then explored via Google Earth in 3D now. So I could watch see the parade happening and if I cared watch it on streaming TV from the UK.
This despite no mention being made by local English papers or TV that a parade was happening. I don't like baseball very much, but simply by watching Twitter a global even became obvious to me. The pace at which information about the world is going to be published, mapped, shared and indexed is about to make this a very different kind of world.
