Open Sim, the frontier

Lots of people enjoy being in the forefront of technology. When Second Life was new it carried with it a excitement about being at the cutting edge of a new technology. This excitement is long gone, and the banal chatter of teenagers or lonely housewives have turned off many of the hard core future geeks.

For them there is Open Sim. Open Sim is an attempt to build an Open Sourced alternative to Second Life without a single corporate owner. People can add Sims to the world.

The idea, on the face of it, makes much more sense than Linden Lab's land monopoly. The Internet always works better in an anarchistic context and even the presence of a monopoly of Linden Labs could act to reduce experimentation.

Open SIM is far more empty that Second Life, but the people there are very helpful and very technical, it recaptures much of the feeling SL had a few years back.
