As collaboration tools go, Second Life and all Virtual Reality tools gives you an ability to move from public event to private conversation. I can focus in on a single person based upon their AV or profile to start a private IM. This makes SL an excellent place to meet new people in real time. This is a feature that is lacking in tools like foursquare, Facebook or Twitter.
