Not entirely sure why someone would spend so much money to own a place in Second Life. That would be over $1,000 a year to own what is essentially a digital doll house.

Land in Second Life is quite expensive - that's true.
The "digital dolls house" reference doesn't make any sense, though. It's a very strange comment from someone who is supposed to have such a long experience of Second Life.

You already saw -and documented with this blog- how people can be committed to their SL activities.

Land is what allows SL users to create content, manage and offer experiences to other users. No surprise we're willing to pay for that. Sometimes, it will even allow us to make money from that.

"Digital doll house" was kind of a joke. But looking at Second Life from the view of a general public, which I have to try and do as a blogger, it is hard to see precisely what it is that makes the property worth the money.

Also people who collect doll houses love their houses and spend a great deal of money on them. In the case of doll houses and Second Life property, there is still not that killer app that gets the mass market in place. SL is a long way from Facebook or YouTube level mass appeal.
