Introduction to Web 4.0 and augmented virtual reality

The Second Life Great Expedition

Above is knightsbridge model in Second Life.  It looks pretty detailed but it is so clean that when I walk around I  feel like I am in some city after a great plague killed everyone.  Web 4.0 would embede "atmosphere" and "feel" information in to a simulation.  Below is mu Web 4.0 prototype.  The idea is that a virtual reality simulation could pull geo positioned information from a "real world" source and use it to make the simulation look more natural.

The Second Life Great Expedition

For example I do not think Second Life simulations do streets or side walks very well.  The side walks are always too clean and too empty, and the streets seem pointless.  A web 4.0 simulation could pull data from reality sources to texture the simulation to make certain region "feel" natural.  The above concept image would use the same buildings and sim layout, but it would only "skin" the sidewalks and streets with images that give the enviornment a more real feel.

The question of how to present the data is a bit tricky.  I have seen people try to do this with 2-D photos placed in the SIM and I don't think that works.  Rather somethig like Microsft Photosynth would enable augent applicaitons to create 3-D created out of pictures.

Finally flying

For years the experience I had of flying in Second Life was pretty lame. The animations did not flow smoothly and there was a lot of lag between keyboard action and plan response. Generally I could never keep interested in flying as sport. Sometimes its fun to fly over a SIM but you can do that without a plane in SL.

But with the new Windows 7 machines and using a browsers like Emerald the experience is greatly improved. It still is not XBOX quality but it is far far smoother and getting to a level of "game play". This is actually fairly critical, because once SL browsers feel like PC Games Second Life could become the universal games platform of the Internet. The costs of developing group games could drop to a fraction over night.

The model of Le Mont Saint-Michel as seen on Google Earth and the SIM in Second Life *Edelweiss* Le Mont Saint-Michel, including the cars and buese in the front was really genius innovation. Too much of SL is too "clean" wihout the actual defail of parked cars, wifes, glare, and other things that make life real.

Too often lacking this chaotic clutter of "ugly" reality SL seems banal, too perfect, too clean, too pretty. I was really impressed by how adding some parked tourist cars impacted the SL SIM.

Robert Scoble talks Second Life

Linden Labs has just released a new player for its virtual world, Second Life. This is important because it makes significant moves toward the Web and shows a new strategy: one of integrating into social networks (much of that shift has yet to come, Linden Lab’s CEO, Mark Kingdon told me in an interview embedded here):

Wow Robert Scoble on Second Life, the ultimate Internet bandwagon joiner is on the train everyone.  Robert does have a good sense of when concepts are ready for market, he probably did more than anybody to promote blogging.  So maybe boom times are just around the corner?

Augment Virtual Reality, a concept

Knightsbridge in Second Life augmented with real world images taken from Google Maps. The ability to draw from real work geo-positioned imaging could augment virtual reality, giving it a greater feeling of reality.

Mixing Neo-Tribes in Second Life

Duchy of Caledon Cymru

Though usually one SIM will serve one Neo-Tribe style like Medieval RP or Steampunk, some communities span across related genres and may include different neo-tribes united in a larger "clan" or even, in the case of Caledon "state".

For example this SIM combines popular Dungeons and Medieval RP style in Caledon's Steampunk SIM. Since the Steampunk community is a re-imagining of the 19th Century how should we understand a place like Duchy of Caledon Cymru?

Should we imagine this as a kind of theme park, a neo-Victorian Gothic construction? In this we we are looking at a community that is a re-imagined and alter past having its own re-imagined and altered past. Should the fact that this castle estate is younger than the older Caledon SIMs be used to argue for it being "newer" and therefore a kind of "reconstruction?", or do the dates of SIMs coming on line show their date of "discovery" an not creation? And what does it mean that some land is younger than other anyways?

If we imagine it as older yet discovered later than much of Caledon, should then this place to be imagined as part of the pre-history of a steampunk identity?

Should you imagine the alternative 19th Century of steam powered computers and airships also has its own pre-history fully alternative back to the Big Bang, or is there a point we should imagine Steampunk as branching off from our reality?

Considering that people are ejected from SIM and communities all the time on the grounds of violating RP these questions might not be that silly.

I myself was ejected from the Deadwood 1876 SIM for wearing Apache clothing. I was informed that since no Indians were allowed in the real Deadwood none could go in the virtual one. I was told to put on jeans and a cowboy hat or leave. I stated that I was playing a prospector who had been living in Indian country and had traded my clothing with local Indians as many prospectors would have done seeing Deadwood was an illegal settlement inside of Indian territory.

I also went on to point out that Levi-Strauss only introduced their brand of blue jeans with rivets (the ones many members were wearing) in 1873 so it would be just as likely someone would trade for an Indian deer skin than get a pair of pants only on the market 3 years. I would also point out that pork pie hats and not 4X4 classic "cowboy hat" was the most common hat in the Old West of the 1870s, in fact overall on the basis of historical evidence my clothing was without question the most likely outfit one would have seen someone in Deadwood 1873 of that day.

Okay I knew when I said all that I was going to get kicked out but hey SL is a big place and if you ever want to go back use an ALT. Anyways I could not face my good Liberal friends if I didn't stand my ground on that one. But issues like this are used endlessly to govern access to what for the most part are public spaces. People really do police much of Second Life on the grounds of imagined story lines.

Potentially this issue can imply who is allowed to buy land where, and what they may be allowed to build on that land. But more than that these questions raising the depth of meaning that seemingly innocent transactions in Second Life have.

Second Life functions at the level of imagination. Imagination is both the least understood and most powerful part of human mental activity. Someone like Freud or Lacan might argue that these issues underline a massive unconscious symbolic order running under Second Life. And like my 1970s prospector kicked out of Deadwood for refusing to take off his Apache clothing, there are real questions of how imagination confirms issues of race, gender, power and class in the form of play.

In the end of the day the big question is who owns the imagined reality of Second Life? Who has the right to imagine its history?

A steampunk hub in Second Life

Caledon Oxbridge Community Gateway provides an excellent hub to explore Caledon and the entire steampunk culture in SL. Steampunk is one of Second Life's mot vibrant and creative tribes. If I might say so they are the most creative non-sexual focused group in SL I know about, which is pretty impressive.

Re-exploring Caledon

Caledon has grown significantly over the past few years. I did a fairly extensive exploration of the SIMs of Caledon a few years back but I can see there has been major growth, so I am going to take the next couple of days (weeks) to re-explore what is there, and try to get a feel for how SL is changing.

The thing to remember that Caledon, just one community is now larger than SL was in its first year. And that Caledon which started as one community in 2006 has not only grown but clearly fractured to a large extent. People I meet today in Caledon have never heard of people who were major figures there just 2 years ago.

I noticed a few years ago during the US election there was a lot of bad blood in some parts of Caledon. For a while a house on the north of Caledon wave the national flag of the Confederate States of America. I have been interested to meet a number of people who hang out near Caledon Oxbridge not even aware of what had been some pretty vicious wars. Caldeon Oxbridge did not even exist during the 2008 election. Its seems that Caledon has grown out a great deal, but is also more fragmented with areas not aware of each other and with no shared values other than an interest in 19th Century buildings and clothing.
