Does Second Life have a value

The other day an infrastructure expert asked me if Second Life had any "use" or "value". Like most practical people he meant more than just entertainment, but some benefit to people using it. Technology geeks, though famous for having "poor social skills" almost all have a high sense of the overall moral good, and there is a geek desire that technology does something of benefit.

Perhaps the sexual anxiety or fear that gets played out in RP is a benefit. And certainly the flourishing artist community in SL benefits culture, but right now for the SL killer app is the ability to present very complex concepts, involving text, audio, video and models in real time and 3D. The lecture here at NLP House - a place for learning shows how rich a learning experience Virtual Reality can be.

I have really strong opinions about silly things that I can validate using the strongest social theory, like why you should not watch Sex in the City or how the Simpsons promotes democracy.
