New Babbage

New Babbage is a SIM build by a community motivated by Steam Punk. Steam Punk is a form of Science Fiction which either imagines a Victorian age empowered with steam driven difference engine computers and flying airships or a re-emergent Victorian age. Steam Punk openly rejects our rampant consumerism.



I love steam punk. Its reject of cheap consumer for better design with flare (its pre-modernism) produces some of my favorite space in Second Life. But I have questions about Victorianism itself. I think Victorianism at its core has ideas about race, power, and money that continue to have a negative impact on most people on the world. Perhaps Neo-Victorianism is just a logical expression of the power relations implicit in the Internet?
