The store remains the primary use of space in Second Life, but probably not the primary way of organising social behavior. Sure people do spend a great deal of time shopping in Second Life for virtual goods, but I think clubs, music halls, lectures, and RP including sexual RP remain the primary ways people come together.

And there are hubs which are just places people come to hang out. Hug are the chat rooms of Second Life where its possible for random clusters of people to form.
