This picture of the British Empire at its full power in New Babbage gives me a chance to propose on of my favorite ideas. I think that it was the British Empire which was the father of the current Internet. The Empire was the first effort to coordinate a global network using electronic communications. It involved a negotiation between elements in the network, with a sharing of power between different parts. Canada was in the Empire in a different way than India. It was always more a place of imagination in popular culture than a real experience. Not only did it structure the Internet by laying the grounding of a global networked electronic structure, but its presence continues to haunt the imaginations of some of the most creative communities in Second Life: the steam punks who look to Victorian and Edwardian London as a kind of perfect place.
