Ruth, the lost mother
Since LL has implemented the new "ball of light" base avatar we no longer rezz first via Ruth and then in to our own avatar. Rather we are a ball of light until enough our our shape can rezz. This prevents the "ruthing" which plagued SL for years, as seen above.
For myself I miss Ruth and I think other people do to. Something about the fact that the base avatar of each and every member of Second Life was in fact a woman was radical and cool in a very unconscious way. Many on the left in SL embraced Ruth, even building altars to her. She was on her way to becoming a cyber feminist saint, but was replaced with a ball of light.
I think this process shows something deep about culture. I think a lot of men playing SL found the experience of suddenly being transformed in to a female as I was above upsetting. It implies that the male identity is not core, and also might raise issues for some players masculinity. The entire thing did stray close to castration complex. So LL replaced the core mother Ruth with a impersonal light just a Christianity exiled mother goddesses with a cold distant god of light.
