View of a virtual Arakis, inspired on the novel Dune by Frank Herbert. Dune was a major event in several generations of computer geeks' lives, but as far as I can see it has not translated into Second Life RP well. Gor and Star Trek, though not on the level of Dune make for better shared play.
Which comes to the key issue for all Second Life, what parts of culture are "play" and what are "spectacle"? TV and movies stressed culture as spectacle but we are moving in to an age of culture as play, and the culture forms that are promoted will likley be because they are easy to play. Easy to play does not mean good or intelligent. Are we moving to the cuture of Chess or the culture of slot machines? Play as engaging imagination and thinking on the highest level or compulisve routine activity?
I fear I have to put my money on crack culture.
